Adam and Eric breaking up and Cal and Jackson not getting together are obviously different situations but they do have the same core, which is the two people in the relationship being at different stages of a journey, which ultimately makes them incompatible (at least for the time being).

Jackson still sees Cal as a girl, but he’s not painted as the bad guy because of that. We see that he’s trying and learning and doing his best, but he’s just not there yet and it’s not something he can fast forward on or flip a switch in his brain. At the same time, it’s not Cal’s job to hold his hand through that and they’re completely justified in putting their needs first. It sucks that they can’t be together, but it’s not because either of them did anything wrong.

On the other hand, Eric explicitly names the problem between him and Adam, that he’s ready to fly while Adam is still learning to walk. And that’s a legitimate reason to break up, because they both need different things from the relationship. It’s okay for Adam to need time, and it’s okay for Eric not to be able to give him that time. But instead of showing us that it’s framed like it’s somehow Adam’s fault that Eric kissed someone else because Adam isn’t progressing fast enough, and I just wish the narrative had shown Adam the same grace as Jackson.
